Recent Events & Public Decency

I am glad to post this entry all-be-it kind of late, but Bubba the Love Sponge, a local radio DJ shock jock was fired from a local Clear Channel Radio station, WFLA-98 Rock, after an FCC fine of $755,000 for indecency from content on Bubba’s show. Aparently the final incident was centered around a complaint from a Jacksonville, FL man about content of a sexual nature on several of the program’s broadcasts in 2001.

Bubba had been at the center of a lot of recent local controversy about decency since the infamous “boob shot round the world”. He has landed himself in court several times over the time that he has been abusing the local radio listening public. Last year he was in court (although charges were dismissed) for a cruelty to animals charge, after he apparently slaughtered a pig live on the radio.

Also Howard Stern has been pulled off of 6 markets by his parent radio company for possible indecency issues.

I think this is all a very good thing because of the issues that we as society have been having with the moral decay. It’s a shame that the chain of events had to happen the way that they have.

Michael Jackson molests children >> California DA arrests & charges Jackson >> Janet Jackson flashes her breast during the Superbowl half time show to draw attention away from Jacko >> Public awareness and concern about decency rises >> Complaints about ongiong public issues roll in >> People (like Bubba & Stern) are moved out of publicly influential positions that they should not have had in the first place.

So following this chain we can say that it took the molestation of several children by a celebrity to finally put the brakes on some of these issues.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a believer in the principle of ‘If you don’t like it don’t watch it’. But not when it is in a completely publicly available medium like broadcast TV or radio.
