Florida Sports Magaziine and low carb diets

This article was in this months issue of Florida Sports magazine, a free publication available at most athletic stores in the Tampa Bay area. This article discusses the hot topic of Low-Carb diets in performance sports. An excellent read.

It should be noted that this article is taken without permission; however,
the author and source are credited. I would have just linked to the article
if it was on the Florida Sports website.

In some of the sidebars of the article it recommends two books and a website:

  1. Nancy Clark’s “Sports Nutrition Guidebook” ($18.95)
  2. Evelyn Tribole’s “Eating on the Run”($16.95)—
    recommended to less athletic people.

Also it recommends several foods, all of which have a low glycemic index
and low caloric index (paraphrased here):

  1. Guava – low in calories and sodium and rich in vitamin C carotenoids potassium and dietary fiber.
  2. Chickpeas – aka garbanzo beans, an excellent source of folic acid and potassium plus a whole host of other nutrients (not mentioned) and an excellent source of dietary fiber.
  3. Blackberries – excellent source of vitamin C potassium and dietary fiber plus magnesium and copper
  4. Falxseeds – said to contain anti-carcinogens (called liganans) and essential fatty acids.
  5. Sweet Potatoes – Not to be confused with yams, these are packed with beta-carotene and other nutrients including folic acid, vitamin C and pantothenic acid. Also the darker the color, the more Vitamin A. these are sweet, but not highly caloric.
