One afternoon, after I had my plans for drinks cancel on my for the evening I decided that sitting around just wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do. So, I pulled up the local concert schedule and found something that I’d be interested in shooting. A few emails & phone calls later, I was set up with photo passes & a +1 for Acoustic Alchemy‘s show at the State Theater. They were a really relaxing show, nice & chill tunes by some very talented musicians.
When I first got to the 600 Block Party around 6:30’ish there was a good amount of people mulling around, the police had the block shut down and still I was hesitant to walk in the middle of the street out of habit. Wandering around a bit as the sun went down and DJ Mega started livening everyone up with some music I got my self into the “block party” groove. The evening’s party culminated with an amazing fashion show produced by several of the designers on the 600 block (MISRED Outfitters , All Sewn Up Boutique, 1 of 1 Customs with Rasta, House of Merch, and more).
Thoroughly, an amazing evening with, ridiculous turn out, packed venues, hot models, exceptional fashions? you get the idea. This was what First Friday (the monthly downtown block party here in St Petersburg, FL) really should be!
I was contacted by the Sarah Gerard and Mitzi Gordon from The Dali Museum of St Petersburg about photographing their portion of Creative Loafing’s Sensory Overload event several weeks ago. They were going to do a temporary art installation in the form of a Dali inspired fashion show and performance art. To say that I was a little excited to do this is really denying my inner tendency for hyperbole.
Over the evening of shooting the Dali’s exhibit at Creative Loafing’s Sensory Overload party) I met some awesome people and had a great time. I’d like to give props to Mitzi Gordon for all of her hard work organizing the exhibit, the designers Ivanka Ska, Aleka Pheonix, Ungala and all of the performers including the staff from the Dali Museum, the dancers from USF and University of Tampa, and Hillsborough Community College and everyone else involved. You were all amazing to work with!
I had to wait a little while to post my take on the evening so that the Dali could get first exposure on the entire set of photos from the evening and Creative Loafing could run with the photos that I took while wandering around with their street team after the Sensory overload party was over.
And with that, I give you my photographic story of the evening?

I’m pretty excited about how the photos from the show last night look, even at my first quick glance through them! Here’s on of my favorites. It’s inspired by this famous Dali photograph.
Last weekend I wandered out to Orlando to see Andrew Spear, Tom Mot, and Ken Sherry throw it down at Sky60 (one of my favorite venues). It was an amazing time, I’ll see you out next time!
My next art show opens this Friday at the Emerald Bar in St Petersburg, FL. Coincidently it’s also George’s birthday!
If you’ve been to the Emerald and seen me there with my camera, changes are that I’ve shot your picture at some point. Come out & see if you’re on the wall. There’s 30 feet of photos & Justin Grant throwin out some awesome music.
